I'm an active field bryologist and leading bryological taxonomist in the Pacific Northwest. Additionally, I am an expert lichenologist and vascular plant surveyor. I conduct inventories of special areas and survey for rare or state listed species as part of the Northwest Forest Plan or other environmental impact statements. Since 1994 I have explored and studied plants from a range of biomes and habitats: Pacific Northwest temperate rainforests, alpine mountains, coastal dunes, boreal forest, high desert plateau, the Intermountain West, the Great Basin Desert, tundra, taiga, and the Arctic.
I have covered tens of thousands of acres and have developed a keen eye for interpreting landscapes, homing in on hotspots, and finding species of interest in them.
I am a taxonomic consultant providing identification services for clients such as The National Park Service, National Monuments, The U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, National Ecological Observation Network, The Nature Conservancy, and various other private entities. I receive bryophyte and lichen specimens from all over the United States.
My meticulous work habit is applied to the field, report writing, and identifications.
I teach custom workshops and lead interpretive hikes.
