In the spring of 2020 I finished identifying all of my Racomitrioideae collections from 2019 from where I was working conducting bryophyte and lichen surveys. Throughout the Coast Range of Oregon and the Cascade Mts. of Washington, these totaled 19/22 species for those states.
During field season I wasn't necessarily aware of how well representative the collections were but now, with results in, I'm reminded of the notion of what birders sometimes participate in as a "big year"; tallying species in a given geographic area within a calendar year. Additionally, this brings my Racomitrioideae "life list" to 22/28 for the continent. Thus far almost all collected only while working including the subarctic with just one pleasure jaunt to an exotic place, the Arctic. I don't encourage the motive of field bryology to be one of listing but it was fun while it lasted whether if at the time I knew it or not. |
